I went into the bathroom to shave not realizing that my electric razor would also bring attention to the bedroom I was in. Whoever the female was heard the noise of the electric device. I didn’t realize it, but when I stepped from the bathroom, I was so shocked to see two people standing in the room that my towel fell off. I went to pick it up but…
“Don’t you dare bend down there young man,” the beautiful lady screamed at me.
I bent down once again to try to pick up the towel but she shouted again and kicked the towel away.
“Uh, uh! You get your hands up right now. And if you don’t get your hands up my security guard here will shoot you!”
Embarrassed, I put my arms in the air. I could be undressed in front of the security guard, but not the lady. I felt like throwing up. She was humiliating me. Was she staring at my privates?
“Mmm! Manny, if he moves, you shoot,” she said staring. “What you doing in my house?”
I was too scared to speak, so I just stood there trying to make words come out of my mouth.
The guard talked to the lady.
“Mrs. Monroe, this is a friend of Lonzo’s. I saw him when Lonzo called me to assist him with a problem Friday night. I do believe he’s spending the night. I heard Lonzo call him Lil’ Haitian. I asked your son why he called him by that name. Hell, I was thinking he was a rapper friend, but Lonzo explained that dude here is a native of Haiti.”
The guard cleared his throat and continued.
“Mrs. Monroe, I think you should allow the young man to cover himself."
I could hear the words the guard whispered to her, so I reached for the covers from the bed to place around my waist. I thanked him for allowing me to cover myself.
“I know how you feel about handsome young men, Mrs. Monroe, but at least let dude cover himself.”
“Yeah, I’ll let him stay covered up, but Manny, I sure don’t see why they call him Lil’ Haitian because this dude is packing! And he ain’t so little in other departments either. You see those damn muscles?”
The guard dropped his head with embarrassment and told me to put on my clothes laid out on the bed. I hurriedly reached for the garments and covered up while holding the blanket over my privates. I thanked him again.
“Okay Manny, you can leave now, since you defying my orders,” she said.
The guard left the room. She directed her conversation to me. I was still too afraid to move too far from the spot, so I just stood there. I was nervous, but I guess I didn’t show it because she came close to me.
“So, Lil’ Haitian, what you doing here in my house? Oh, so you a quiet one, huh? There’s no reason to be afraid now. Manny is gone. I’m sorry I made you nervous, but my eyes kind of got a little stuck and well…anyway. So, you are Haitian, huh? You are so tall and handsome, so I don't see why they call you Lil' Haitian. You’re different from Lonzo’s other friends. Well, they are good looking too, well some of them, but you got them beat by a landslide.”
She walked all the way around me and ended up in front of me toe-to-toe.
“Yeah, I like a lot of my son’s friends but…”
She couldn’t complete her sentence because Lonzo walked in.
“Ma, what the hell are you saying to my friend?”
“Boy, this is my damned house and I say to him what the hell I want to say to him!”
“Oh, well let me go and see what dad says about it.”
“No, no, no, son! You got Mommy wrong. I just met your friend and I was just getting to know him. Manny told me who he is.”
“Poor choice of words in getting to know someone, Ma! How many times I got to tell you don’t get fresh with my boys? Dad will kill you if he knew you were doing this flirting shit! You old enough to be his mom!”
“Boy, you know I was younger than your age when I had you, now, and you ain’t too much younger than me, now, so don’t you go rubbing that age-appropriate behavior stuff in my face! Anyway, I’m going to prepare y’all some dinner. And next time, you welcome your Ma home better than that! It was nice to meet you Lil’ Haitian. You come on down and eat and enjoy your stay. And let me know your real name when I see you again. Too many blacks around here have these aliases. Anyway, Lord knows Lonzo has enough company around here, but I don’t mind because he’s been blaming me for years for him not having a brother or sister. See y’all later!”
She kissed Lonzo on his cheek then twisted out of the door. I fell to the bed in relief. Lonzo shouted out after his mom.
“His name is Impact, Ma, for your information.
Lonzo looked at me all apologetically.
“I’m sorry you had to experience that Mom stuff, but I told you about my moms and how she likes young men. She doesn’t care about pushing up on my friends, either. I just pray my dad don’t ever hear her flirting with my boys. She’s right about being close to my age. We grew up some together at grandma’s. It was embarrassing us both in school, so we are more like brother and sister than mom and son."
Lonzo saw the look and my face and asked me a question.
"Man, are you all right? You look like you just saw a monster.”
“Lonzo, your mom had me so scared that I couldn’t speak a word! I couldn’t even move! I thought she was gonna call Immigration. And now that you tell me she had you at a young age, I notice the youthfulness of your parents by the cars in your garage. Your mom looks really, really young.”
